No, it is not at all safe for women to travel in India. From every public transport to every public place, no place is safe for women. The cases of groping and sexual harrassment are such a common thing to be heard of when it comes to public transports in India. Even in a broad daylight women never feel safe, from creepy stares to disgusting comments, women are subjected to everything when they are travelling alone. And women cannot even imagine to travel alone during night time.

There are so many cases of women getting touched inappropriately in the buses which are usually very crowded. So it’s not even possible for them to know who did such a disgusting thing, and even if they do know, there’s no point of it, because the perpetrators always have the excuse that it was just accidental due to cramped space. We need stricter laws concerning the sexual exploitations that women face everyday, either while travelling, or in their workplace, or even their in own homes. And it doesn’t just stop at the stricter laws, we need better implementation of those laws too. Perpetrators should never ever get away with their disgusting crimes and they should be severely punished. Only then we can reduce crimes against women in the country. And only then, women can feel safe to travel alone, by freedom and with dignity.

I’d say even today in 21st century India isn’t safe for women to travel alone because of the fact that the cases of abduction, kidnapping, sexual harrasment and rape are constantly increasing. In a country, where women are not allowed to leave their home late at night, it practically is impossible to say that it would be safe for a women to travel all alone. India is a country where Eve-teasing and sexual harrasment are pretty common in a country like India for solo women travelers.
Despite various progress in various sectors and development side by side India as a nation is still failing to provide a secure environment to women be it in terms of foreign travelers or domestic ones. I’d say it basically isn’t about safe or unsafe place it is about the mentality of the people living in that particular area. States like Himachal, Uttrakhand and many other places in northern India are considered safer with less crime rate in comparison to South India. New Delhi in particular the capital of the country is considered one of the most unsafe places for women in India.
Why is it that we as citizens of nation are failing to make our country a better place to live in?
The only answer I can think of right now is the mindset of people which has not only retarded their emotional health, physical health but also a mental health. Women till present date are treated like sex objects and are often disrespected, disregarded, considered inferior in a patriarchal society.
The prevalent rape culture in India is one of the reasons for considering the nation unsafe place to travel for women. The judicial system is also failing partially to deal with such heinous crimes as there are no stringent laws to deal with the same.

I think each and every person in our country can answer this question without a second thought. The issue of women’s safety in India is constantly in news. Women travellers are not at all save in India. This is has got prominent to an extent that now if something happens to a girl while travelling alone the blame immediately goes to her. Why did she travel alone? What was the need of travelling at night? Various questions like these are thrown upon women if they are met with any incident outside their homes. Our government, our society has constantly been failing to provide safety to women. However we must not at all cost conclude from this, that women should be confined to their homes for their safety. If we look at the statistics most women are raped and harmed by men they know. They are harassed and attacked in their own houses. So we cannot excuse such crimes by restricting our women in their houses, this only gives rise to sexism.

Its good for us as women to follow strategic steps for our safety while heading outside our homes alone. However, if not in our hand to prevent a mishap. All we can do is take the necessary prevention try to protect ourselves.

Women are not safe in their own homes let alone travelling alone in India. Women’s safety is a big issue in our country and that is the reason that women have the fear of traveling alone after a certain time limit and a certain place. India is a vast country that needs to be explored but women kill their dreams because of the solo travel fear. Let’s take an example, suppose you are a girl and you are in a new city and the time is 10 pm and you are alone in the transport. You will obviously have fear or even slight discomfort at that time. Women are strong but they also know that they are not safe and no matter how much they try to make themselves believe that they can handle the situations. It’s difficult because of the people who are unafraid of the law and have the audacity to commit crimes knowing that eventually they will be freed and because of the people who victim blame. The problem is that the government isn’t doing as much for women’s safety as they are obliged to do. Whether it’s travelling at day or night, it’s unsafe for women across the country. Even if something happens to a woman, she’s to be blamed because this society has many objections to women travelling alone. So, it’s very important that the government does its best in order to provide safety for women at every place and at all times. Women travelling alone is a far-sighted dream in our country that needs to become a reality.
