Why do we always hate men for not understanding and supporting us? Why have we made this a war of the genders, when there are just as many women who judge us, dismiss us, dehumanise us and devalue us? All those aunties who are over-eager to get you married the moment you hit eighteen. Those women who judge you if you are doing better than them at life. Slut, bitch, whore… They call you all sorts of names. Those who urge you to try and make an abusive marriage work. Those who think you need a man to be accepted. Those who have no inhibitions ruining your relationships and seducing the man you are with. Those who would probably destroy you, if they see you walking with a man. Very few women actually uplift each other. We try to bring each other down more than any man does.

Child marriage is a curse. It snatches away childhood from children’s life. Child marriages has been prevailing in our country since a long time. India is estimated to have over 24 million child brides. 40% of the world’s 60 million child marriages take place in India according to the National Family Health Survey. The most common reasons for underage marriages includes poverty, illiteracy, financial constraints, religious and social traditions. Most of the girls drop out from schools and colleges without completing their education and are married off to men. Having incomplete education makes them financially dependent on their husband and limits their activities to performing house chores and raise their kids. Married teenage girls who are uneducated are more prone to sexual and domestic abuse than married adult and educated woman. The government of India has proposed raising the minimum legal age of marriage for women from 18 to 21 years. Currently, the minimum legal age for women to marry is 18 years and the same for men is 21 years. The bill has not been passed yet due to resistance from several parties.
Despite of all these efforts many girls in rural areas are married much before the age of eighteen, they become mothers at an early age when their bodies are not even ready for it, citing several health issues. Child marriage is a violation of human rights and child rights and is clearly a punishable offence.

No matter how much the world has progressed, the idea that women can never be equal to men still prevails as an ivy in our society. Be it at work, home or field, women face inequality everywhere.
Somehow we have believed that women and sports do not go hand in hand. The patriarchy related to sports have been prevailing in out society since forever. A guy is encouraged to go outside and play with his friends whereas a girl is not expected to do the same because well – a girl is a GIRL. Girls do not do sports. Our sports industry for too long, has been dominated by men. And despite the efforts of our women, we still cannot say that our sports industry is not dominated by men. We never watch our women’s cricket team matches with the enthusiasm as we watch the men’s team. And somehow it is easy for us to criticize all this but for the women who have to bear this on an everyday basis, it’s not a simple case of accept, forgive, and forget. Women need to go an extra mile to reach at a position where it is just a cakewalk for men in comparison. And the discrimination does not end here. Despite their talent or work ethic the wage gap between men and women still exists. The wage gap is seen in almost every sport played by men and women. They are often body shamed and accused of being a ‘showcase’ for men. They never get the same respect as men. Their sports is often overlooked by our society.
Although women are now endorsing and demanding their social rights — in both their virtual and physical realities — the truth is that even till this day, women do not receive as much respect or recognition on the professional front as their smug male counterparts.

President Obama made a headline in the year 2014 with what he said: “Just Say No to Stay-at-home Moms”. With what Obama said, what do you think of women working outside and managing the responsibilities of their family at the same time? Most women working outside are ridiculed for not doing their part as a mother or a wife. The prime factor behind this is the socio- cultural ideologies of our society. Our society expects women to do all the house chores and look after their family. They are more likely to be married even before they turn eighteen. And as women enter a workplace they are already entering an unequal landscape that has been traditionally believed to be ruled by men. There is prejudice treatment against them at the time of hiring. They are judged on the basis of their marital status. They are even paid much less than men despite being on the same position and doing the same kind of job. Pay raise or training opportunities are some other issues faced by women at work. Problems like sexual harassment have become so common at workplaces that often women tend to ignore such treatments and do not report it due to the lack of support. They are often denied promotions being labelled as ‘women’- inefficient than men. All these practices preaches the idea of a woman limited to being a mere ‘housewife’ serving her family.
Women are capable of working, earing, looking after their family, children and managing their household and I believe that the decision of working outside or staying at home should be left in their hands. If women have the passion for being housewives, they should go for it, if not then they should be able to choose what they want for themselves.

The real meaning of feminism is – equal rights to women as men. Men and women should have equal political, social and economical rights. Feminism= equality. This is how simple feminism is. Yet people do not understand this and start calling them feminists just because ‘everybody else does?!’
But we often tend to get a wrong idea of feminism in turn giving rise to pseudo feminism- a believe where women are considered as the supreme beings and men are quashed for all the injustices done to them. Where it is believed that the only reason for a women not being able to rise above and be successful are men. How ridiculous! When on one hand we preach equality between men and women through feminism, on the other hand we say that Men are the problem to all the injustices faced my women. It is due to the sole reason that the real feminism is misinterpreted. We must know that the goal behind feminism to bring equality. But as long as we do not put an end to assigning responsibilities, duties and opportunities on a single gender, we won’t strive for true feminism.

There are many law colleges in Banglore but what matters is – choosing the right college. Getting your law degree from just any college is not going to fetch you anything. However at end, what matters are your own skills. But you do need the right kind of teachers to acquire those right skills. Choosing a college is never easy. And it’s more of a difficulty when you do not get into the college of your choice. So it’s always good to have back ups even for your back up. Men are 52% more likely to have access to the internet than women in the world’s least developed countries. Not everyone has access to technology. There are a large number of women who do not own a simple smartphone. They do not have the necessary digital literacy, have less understanding of technology and have no presence on social media platforms. Lack of education, affordability and prevalence of socio- cultural norms are the key factors restriction women’s online presence. Bridging this digital gender divide requires improved access to internet devices, education and training. The key to bridging the digital divide is recognizing the fact that each individual should have equal access, regardless of gender.

Feminism is a belief that promotes equality between genders. It’s main aim is to lift up women and bring them to the same level as men. It gives women the much needed voice in a patriarchal word. It ensures that women are paid equally for the same work and are not abused by men. It supports equality in education and opportunities.
In India, the First Wave of Indian Feminism started in 1850 -1920, this phase uprooted the age old practice of Sati. Raja Ram Mohan Roy was the first who spoke against the subjugation of women’s rights, he out rightly opposed the idea of Sati. And suddenly a wave of feminism started, questions were raised against the sanctity of laws which prohibited remarriage of widows by passing the Widow’s Remarriage Act 1856.
The Second Wave of Indian Feminism was around 1920 -1980. Women actively participate in the feminist movement in this phase. They demanded for the freedom and liberty of their husbands. They became more aware of their rights and this movement grew further and women urged each other to come up and stand against the patriarchy.
The Third Wave of Indian Feminism particularly highlighted the harassment against women. Sexual Harassment at workplace was considered as important issue to be discussed. The Supreme Court of India during that time introduced Prevention of Sexual Harassment at Workplace Act, 2013 which was one of the biggest achievement of this period. Many such waves of feminism followed later….like #MeToo movement.

Though a lot still needs to be achieved and there are various impediments in making this reality available to a large section of women, the women’s movement has brought women’s issues centre stage and made them more visible, contributing immensely to women’s struggle for equality
