Education today is more like a basic necessity and the importance of the same has been recognised by the government of India which states that Education is a basic fundamental right of every child ageing between 6-14 which has been mentioned under Article 14 and 21 of our Indian constitution.
Girls education in particular if talked about playa a very significant role due to the fact that education forms the very basis for the independence of a girl in various aspects of life beginning from being financially independent to being recognised in a society in her individual capacity. But it is easier said than done because in a developing nation like India where patriarchy has been in practice for centuries it is still a common belief system that girls should be taught and engaged in households rather than giving them the opportunity to educate themselves.
In the present 21st century also there are many girls across the country and the global who desire to attend schools and get access to basic education and be capable enough to live a life of their dreams. There are many obstacles being faced for girls education in India which includes poverty, gender biased discrimination, cultural stereotypes, child marriage etc.
Many initiatives have been taken up by the government and the people in general to uplift girls by providing them access to education. Currently many Non Governmental Organization who are working for the sole purpose of educating girls about their rights and duties. Many schemes have been started by our government like ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ scheme in Haryana which particularly aims to promotes girl child education, udaan scheme, Balika Samriddhi Yojna etc. Along with these steps I believe awareness programs should be conducted in internal rural areas which will help in widening up the perspective of the society as well. Awareness campaigns should be organised for helping people understand the importance of education specially for girls.

We have all heard of our country’s motto “beti bachao, beti padhao”. While we are still struggling to save the girl child from being killed right at birth, it doesn’t come off as a surprise that education of girl child is doing no better. There are hundreds of obstacles that girls face in our country that hamper their education. Right now, let’s focus on the struggle they face at their own homes. There are lots of girls in India whose parents still consider them as “paraya dhan” who just needs to be taught household work so that they can be given away to a man in marriage. Girls are still not considered equal to their sons in the eyes of their parents. Then how can we make education accessible to these girls?

The only answer is awareness. The parents need to be made aware of the importance of educating their children regardless of their gender. Parents need to open their eyes and broaden their mindset on the topic of their daughters’ education, and only then can we achieve success in our motto of “beti bachao, beti padhao”.

Why is it always a woman who is barred from education? Many women fail to pursue their education and live the lives of their dreams due to the senseless typical mindset of out society. Some parents do their part by just graduating their girl and making her an educated, skilled, marriage material’ women. There are various obstacles that a girl faces in order to get proper education. The prime factor behind this is the socio- cultural ideologies of our society. Our society expects women to do all the house chores and look after their family. They are more likely to be married even before they turn eighteen.
Many families are unwillingly, not able to send their girls to school because they simply cannot afford it. So they prefer marrying their daughters a much task than carrying on the burden of educating them. The ever increasing number of gender-based violence is another factor leading to the decrease in the number of girls’ enrollment in schools.

When a girls receives education, it helps her in all aspects of her life. It is a fact that girls who are well-educated and are capable of earning on their own are less likely to faces any kinds of abuses from their husband. It is rightly stated that “Educating a boy is educating a person… Educating a girl is educating a nation”.

Earlier women were not even allowed to step outside their homes alone so just forget about education or working outside. Our society has failed as a whole to provide women equality and to eradicate patriarchy from the lives of women. Women aren’t allowed to work outside their homes, that is the reason they aren’t encouraged to study. It is a notion that education will only be helpful to boys as they are the breadwinner of the family. No consideration is given to the education of the girls as when they grow up they will have to be a homemaker and kill their dreams and passions because of the fact that women are expected to be working at their homes, taking care of their families. the concept that a man is supposed to work outside and be a breadwinner for the family while a woman should work inside and take care of the household. A girl is denied an education because society thinks that boys will only get benefits from it.
In a household when a boy is born, he is expected to take an interest only in sports or careers like engineering, piloting, finance, etc. However, when a girl is born, she is likely to focus on learning how to cook or clean which sets a base that when she grows up all she has to do is work in the kitchen, take care of her family and do household chores. Even if a girl is allowed to work outside it is limited to a certain parameter. She is stated to pursue teaching, nursing or to work in an environment where there is hardly any encounter with males. She is considered “too emotional and sensitive” for hard work. Similarly, when a boy wants to pursue higher studies, he has no restrictions in choosing his subjects or institution but with regard to a girl, it becomes a matter of debate whether or not she will be allowed to study further and even if she’s allowed where she will study so that she remains behind the curtains of the societal judgment. When it comes to the workplace, sometimes there are traces of women falling prey to misogyny. When men witness women doing better than them, they hardly accept a woman’s leadership and as a result, she is required to work in a tactful environment where her opinions do not matter as much. Now times have changed and girls are starting to get educated. There is a lot of awareness about a girl’s right to education. We see women are making an impact in every field and they are leading in every way. There is no place where we find women any less than men. So, it’s very important to lift women and give them the well-deserved positions that society has always ignored just because of their gender. Girls are encouraged to study now but still, there are some places where girls are denied education. We need to see that girls are not stopped from getting educated because it will be a boon for the whole society.
