Acid attacks are some of the most brutal and horrible assaults that a person can endure. And sadly in India, it’s all too common. From small towns to big cities the rise in the attacks have been steadily increasing in recent years. And while records show a certain number of reported attacks, the grim reality is that the number is much, much higher. The truth is that a lot of acid attacks go unreported because of the social stigma of all the involvement of a family member. A lot of times because of lack of medical facilities the person dies right after the attack. Other times The attacks conceive because the woman doesn’t want to implicate her husband or any other family member who was involved in the attack. Acid attacks stem from a mentality that says, “if I can’t have her, no one else can”. So normally about 4-5 years ago, acid attacks were predominantly a women-centric crime. It means that it was a form of gender-based violence. But over the years we have seen an alarming friend growing that people are starting to use acid as a weapon, and I believe that’s because it’s so easily available. It’s extremely cheap and it’s a cowardly act to commit. For a long time, it was assumed that acid attacks are higher in rural areas because the access to acid is much higher. But the access is quite easy even in urban cities. A common motive for the acid attacks back then and today is envy and jealousy. Astro attacks go back hundreds of years, dating back to at least the 1830s. In India unlike the west the majority of the survivors are women and The attacks are very closely linked to gender discrimination. Indian women are charged based on appearance and when this starts happening the attacker believes that if destroys her appearance he is going to destroy her standing in society. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what’s happening because we as a community do not understand disfigurement.
