The Indian Cosmetics Industry is one of the biggest industries in India. It is estimated to be worth 8.5 billion USD (6.2 Crores) in India. It has grown steadily throughout the years. Makeup is very popular in India.
And yet, they are one of the main sources of discrimination in India. In India, the beauty industry caters to light-skinned people rather than dark-skinned people. People with a darker complexion find it very difficult to find a foundation that suits them. They have to mix different ones to get the correct foundation for their skin. Makeup products are marketed to people with a lighter complexion. It’s almost as if people with a darker complexion do not exist even though they make more than half of the population. The existence of skin whitening products like Glow and Lovely and Ponds promotes the idea that fair skin is good and anyone who has anything other than that is unattractive. These creams do not work but what they do achieve is harming skin and colorism. And it’s not just skin whitening creams, many beauty products cater to one type of skin tone and also show that in their advertisements by hiring fair actors to star in their ads. They also alter some celebrities’ skin complexion in the advertisements to make them seem fairer than they are.
India has preferred fair-skinned people for centuries. They get more opportunities, are more popular. and the ideal skin color. It is sad that people with a darker complexion are being put down because of their skin color. Why does skin color have to decide our fate?
The beauty industry definitely needs to step up and improve itself. Skin whitening creams need to go extinct. How can we promote beauty when skin whitening is very popular? The beauty industry needs to cater to people of all complexions. People are beautiful no matter what.
