Breast Cancer Awareness Month is marked internationally every October, it has been made with an aim to increase awareness about it and to helps to increase awareness and support for awareness. Early detection with proper care and treatment can greatly reduce fatalities. It is estimated that almost 1.38 million new cases and 458,000 deaths occur each year due to breast cancer. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide, both in developed and developing countries. In low- and middle-income countries the incidence has skyrocketed over the years due to increased life expectancy, increased urbanization, and the adoption of western life.
Sadly there is not enough information on the causes of breast cancer, therefore, the diagnosis of this disease is still the head of breast cancer control measure. When breast cancer is diagnosed early, and with adequate diagnosis and treatment, there is a good chance that breast cancer can be cured. If diagnosed too late, however, therapeutic treatment is no longer an option. In such cases, care is needed to alleviate the suffering of the patients and their families. The majority of deaths (269 000) occur in low- and middle-income countries, when women with breast cancer, are diagnosed in late stages. It is mainly due to a lack of awareness on early detection and barriers to health services. This situation can be reverted if adequate public health programs are put in place.
The problem also lies in the fact that this issue is still considered taboo in our Indian culture and as a result, women are not able to freely talk about this problem. We have to take some concrete steps in order to have an impactful result. The government must ensure that an adequate amount of medical budget is spent on the dissemination of information regarding the early detection and prevention of breast cancer. Women also have to be encouraged to feel free about discussing these problems as most breast cancer cases can be detected at an early stage.
