Gender equality supports a myth that the qualms of every individual in the society can be resolved through equal distribution of opportunities and resources. To be more precise, gender equality is blind to the existence of social stratification. Each individual is uniquely located within hierarchical frameworks and with unique positioning comes unique problems. While it is impossible to address each person’s difficulties with precision, it is possible to reduce the extent of the consequences. To mete out gender equality would mean gauging the needs of individuals from different genders by the same yardstick and providing relief on its basis. The yardstick in question would inevitably be, if not in favour of one gender, discriminatory towards others. For instance, within the same gender category, it is obvious that the needs of a disabled woman are significantly unique and chances are that they are taken for granted. Gender equality is built on the unrealistic assumption that all individuals can be taken on a level playing field. In simple words, it fails to address intersectional aspects of gender oppression.
Gender justice is comparatively a more inclusive approach to eradicating gender oriented problems and oppression in the society. It places a much required emphasis on equity- providing justice while taking into consideration the particularities of intersecting identities such as class, caste, race, sexuality etc. The focus remains on equal outcome instead of equal distribution. For this reason, gender justice has a brighter prospect of enabling inclusive growth.
