A lot of healthy and constructive discussion surrounding women’s rights and safety have begun impacting a positive change in society. However, the theoretical space around women’s empowerment and safety is progressing at a much faster rate than its corresponding effect on reality. It certainly does take time for the world to fully mature into a safe and healthy space for women. Nevertheless, it is all the more important to remain persistent in educating people, actively discussing female oppression and voicing out the concerns of women.

Women should have equal opportunities as men to live and experience the world. Predominately, her choices, be it choosing a career or deciding on something quotidian, are primarily made based on what is safe and what is not. A poetically spirited woman might desire to stroll along the beach at night to enjoy the cold wind, but wouldn’t do so on account of ascertaining her safety. For the same reason a talented youngster might turn down her dream job at a reputed company if she is asked to work in the night shift. That said, there are certain places in India which are considerably safer for women, but such exclusivity only helps a small group of women.

Training in self-defense is an empowering way to break the curfew. It gives women the confidence to venture out, knowing that they are equipped to defend themselves from attack. When safety is no longer a major concern, women become freer to pursue their passions. Self-defense works on a more holistic level, where it gives one the mental and physical strength required to face challenges. It also makes an important statement that women aren’t vulnerable. They aren’t weak as they are made out to be. As a bonus, it would most certainly discourage a lot of benevolent sexism from family and friends who insist that a male member ‘escort’ her so as to keep her protected.

No thanks, she can take care of herself.
