Child marriage is an illegal custom where an individual who has not attained the eligible age for marriage enters into wedlock either through a formal ceremony or an informal union. It is considered to be forcefully done since the individual is a minor under the care of adults.
The minimum legal age for marriage in India is 18 for girls and 21…[Read more]

Mayuravarshini Mohana replied to the topic The sexism of swear words. ( A large portion of swear words are misogynistic) in the forum Sexism & Patriarchy 2 years, 10 months ago
Swear words are nothing but packets of anger and frustration hurled at other. Innocent as the definition seems, what sets them apart from any other expression of anger is the humiliating implications they are destined to evoke. When cussing at women, these words are direct attacks upon them, whereas when cussing at men, the intended humiliation…[Read more]

Mayuravarshini Mohana replied to the topic When a man cooks food it is called as an Art but when a woman cooks food it is called as her Duty. Why? in the forum Gender Justice 2 years, 10 months ago
It is true that when man cooks, it is treated as a special feat. It becomes art, and most importantly, it becomes a career. The special treatment is meted out because it is something not expected out of him. On the other hand a woman is obligated to cook. No matter how much prowess she exhibits, it is hardly appreciated with exception to the…[Read more]

Mayuravarshini Mohana replied to the topic The need to incorporate gender neutral (or gender inclusive) pronouns in every day speech and writing. in the forum Gender Justice 2 years, 10 months ago
Gender, in feminist discourses, is often perceived as socially constructed i.e., the value and credit accorded to gender holds true only when socially situated. The plebeian understanding of gender as a concrete identity problematizes unique individual expressions. Gender is in fact not an identity but a pattern of behaviour and thinking.…[Read more]

Mayuravarshini Mohana replied to the topic When a woman 'decides' to give up her career… in the forum Sexism & Patriarchy 2 years, 10 months ago
The practice of adopting the husband’s surname began in ninth century England when lawmakers began contemplating the legal aspects of families and marriage. A wife was considered to have integrated into her husband’s family and thus began the custom of taking up his name. In India, the practice has a cultural connotation where marriage is its…[Read more]

Mayuravarshini Mohana replied to the topic Why is work-life balance predominantly preached to women? in the forum Gender Justice 2 years, 10 months ago
Work is a part of life, not life itself. The pandemic has blurred the line between working- hours and personal time, the physical and mental effects of which reassert the importance of a demarcation. It is important for each person to acknowledge that their careers do not define them, that it is only an aspect of their lives. Work –life balance i…[Read more]

Mayuravarshini Mohana replied to the topic Debate: Women in politics and parliament in the forum Gender Barriers and Solutions to Leadership 2 years, 10 months ago
Women are highly underrepresented in the political stage, locally, nationally, and globally. World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report 2021 identified that women represent only 26.1% of around 35,500 parliament seats in the 156 countries focused by the survey. The lack of parity in representation is even more accentuated in India. In the S…[Read more]

Menarche, or the onset of menstruation, holds a significant importance in the life of a woman. Mayuravarshini Mohana replied to the topic Do women play a role in upholding patriarchy? in the forum Sexism & Patriarchy 2 years, 10 months ago
To proceed on this discussion, it is important to fundamentally acknowledge something- the fight is against patriarchy and not men, against the oppressive system and not a particular gender. Just as there are feminist men, there are patriarchal women. The enemy here is the ideology.
Why then would women support a system that clearly…[Read more]

Mayuravarshini Mohana replied to the topic Our society has begun unlearning colourism. Reality or Illusion? in the forum General Discussions 2 years, 10 months ago
On her Instagram page about a year ago, Mindy Kaling shared a video of a Sri Lankan girl saying that she won’t grow up to be beautiful because of her dark skin. The sensible adult beside her stepped in to tell her gently that skin colour has no bearing on beauty. A smile and a good heart will make her radiant. It was indeed heart-warming late i…[Read more]

Mayuravarshini Mohana replied to the topic Why does society place greater onus on mothers in raising children? in the forum Sexism & Patriarchy 2 years, 10 months ago
When boiled down to its essence, the problem is just another avatar of the patriarchal beliefs surrounding ‘motherhood’. A seemingly unanimous understanding of motherhood is that it comes naturally to women. A mother has the ‘instincts’ required to safe guard her children. While this may apply to most mammals in the animal kingdom, it cannot…[Read more]

Mayuravarshini Mohana replied to the topic How can professional women overcome imposter syndrome? in the forum Employment Opportunities 2 years, 10 months ago
When an individual believes that she is not as qualified and skilled as others believe her to be, her confidence is hard hit. She becomes more doubtful of herself and her abilities. The imposter syndrome, as it is widely called, gives her a sense that she is faking it. Studies show that women, especially those from minority communities, are more…[Read more]

Mayuravarshini Mohana replied to the topic When attempting to create a more harmonious society, gender is a more important factor than class or income. in the forum Gender Justice 2 years, 10 months ago
I strongly disagree. Gender inequality can never estrange itself from the influence of class and other societal factors. Societal problems are a convoluted mesh of class, caste, sexuality, gender etc. To only look at gender will take us nowhere. It is practical to look at how these various factors intersect to cause a particular issue.

Mayuravarshini Mohana replied to the topic Why a women is expected to be compromising more in a marriage? in the forum Sexism & Patriarchy 2 years, 10 months ago
The excessive emphasis given to marriage in a woman’s life is precisely the cause for the imbalance. Culture propagates that marriage is the primary and perhaps only aspect of a woman’s life. Her status and standing in a society are dictated by the nature of her married life. In the eyes of the society, having a couple of children and a hus…[Read more]

Mayuravarshini Mohana replied to the topic Debate: How Women Can Become Good Leaders? in the forum Gender Barriers and Solutions to Leadership 2 years, 10 months ago
There prevails a certain hesitation when offering women leadership roles. Most often they are not even considered. A wide-held belief is that companies or institutions are better off with male CEOs. It is, in fact, more a prejudice than an observation.

Mayuravarshini Mohana replied to the topic Why are Indian women expected to be 'homely'? in the forum Sexism & Patriarchy 2 years, 11 months ago
What do people mean by ‘homely’? A woman who is submissive, docile and balances the entire household on her shoulders. It is, not surprisingly, a gendered term.
Women have been unanimously ordained as the gatekeepers of culture. Ever wondered why a woman wearing western attire to a temple or a wedding comes under heavy censure while a man is fre…[Read more]

Mayuravarshini Mohana replied to the topic Fairy Tales like Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty have women as passive characters… in the forum Sexism & Patriarchy 2 years, 11 months ago
Bed-time story telling is now a popular custom and one to be encouraged. However, it becomes problematic when the stories being narrated contribute towards sexist conditioning of young minds. Fairy tales, which are much loved by children, are guilty of this.
The heroines of fairy-tales get into a fix and it is ultimately a man, a certain…[Read more]
