According to Wiktionary, heteronormativity is the assumption that all human beings are either male or female in both sex and gender, and that sexual and romantic attraction and activity only occurs, or is only normal, between people of different sexes. So basically heteronormativity idealizes or normalises heterosexual relationships and the gender binary. This normalisation has numerous consequences in the real life. It not only tries to alienate people who don’t conform to heterosexual standards but it also creates a big divide in the society on the basis of age old concepts.
