More than 370,000 cases of crimes against women were reported in 2020, as per Government of India. In 2021, there was a 30 percent rise in complaints of crimes against women. These are not just statistics, this is an eye-opener for all of us that should alarm us about the crimes that women are facing against them which increases every day. These stats are just the reported ones, there are many instances of crime that go unreported in India. So just imagine the rate of crime against women in India. Violence and discrimination against women and girls are human rights violations still they are becoming victims.
Women are assaulted, raped, kidnapped eve teased, and are discriminated against as well. Crime against women isn’t limited to roads and strangers, women are not safe even at their homes and in between the people they know. Women are facing domestic violence, they are molested by their own family members, they have to face assault for dowry, workplace harassment is at an all-time high in our country and what not!

    What causes crime against women?

Are women weak? Absolutely NOT! So why is the number of crimes against women at an all-time high? Why is it that a woman is scared to walk alone at night? Why does a woman have to fear her in-laws if the dowry is not given at the time of marriage? Why are women told to dress properly or to speak properly or to behave properly? WHY??

It is because of the whole society. It is because of the stereotypes. It is because we think that women are weak so they are a great target for crimes. It is because of our ignorance. It is because of the society that raises questions on a woman and not the criminal if she is raped or molested. She is judged by her clothes or by her character and people say that “she was asking for it”.
It is because we allowed the male to dominate society and gave them the tag of a stronger gender. It is because of all those people who don’t fear the law, who don’t respect women, and who don’t regard women as equals. It is because of each and every one of us who don’t stand for a woman’s right! It is because of each one of us who is afraid to shackle the social stigmas associated with women. It is because we aren’t fighting together against the crimes and putting blame on either women or law or any other illogical reason. It is because of all of us!!

How will we be able to solve this problem?

By breaking the stereotypes associated with women, by standing and fighting for women’s rights. By not questioning or judging a woman’s character if she becomes a victim of any of the crimes. By supporting women to speak up and by speaking for the women. By shackling the concept of dowry and other illogical concepts. By respecting women and considering them as equal. By eliminating all the thoughts within us that contribute to crimes against women. And by not contributing to the things that make this world unsafe for women.
All we have to do is simply start from within ourselves, if we really want to finish crimes against women.

Has there been a day when you opened the newspaper in the morning and didn’t find a single news related to crime against a woman? No, right? Crime against women include cases of rape, harassment, sexual assault, dowry deaths, acid attacks and kidnappings. The cases or violence have been steadily increasing in our country and these crimes have been so normalized that we do not even attempt to read or inquire about them.

So what actually is the cause?
Patriarchy has been cited as the main cause of violence against women. A girl child is not educated in our country due to the strong bounds created by patriarchy, resulting in illiteracy coupled with low level of education making women more dependent on men for their survival. All this, in turn increases the domination of men over women.
Family factors also play a great role in the crimes related to women. Witnessing a father beating the mother during childhood leads to perpetration of violence against his wife in adulthood. A child applies what he has been taught by his parents in the outer world.

    The solution?
    Education.
Education for both men and women. Education for the entire society. And education doesn’t mean learning textbooks and having a degree, education means knowledge of our entire society. Knowledge of our rights and duties. Men needs to be taught that women are to be respected, to be treated an equal and not be a treated as a toy. On the other hand, women needs to be made aware of their rights, they need to learn the facts and the prevalence. We must strive for equality and together fight for the injustices done to women.
