In our society, traditionally most of the roles are assumed to be a man’s. If someone is told to go visit a doctor, the image of doctor comes in their mind as a man in a white coat. Do you think we have made any progress in changing the society’s mindset of always assuming male to be the default?038 deepika SinghParticipant@038-deepikaMarch 14, 2022 at 1:02 pm #34564
We are and we have been living in a society where a man is considered a default since a very long time. Whether it’s the plurals always taking the male form, or writers presuming a male reader, this is pervasive. If you ask a child to describe a scientist, most will draw a man wearing a coat. The assumption that science is a male-dominated field is a problem. Before taking any decision women need the consent of their father, brother or husband. Without consent their life doesn’t work. The society does not let it work. Women’s participation in decision making is decreases with the lack of their education. But again women needs the consent of their parents for that too. From getting education to marry the guy of their choice none of these decisions are finalized by women. And this is not only limited to their homes the lack of say in decision making by women highly prevails in workplaces too, where women are often silenced and not given heed to. They are considered unworthy for decision making in comparison to men.
Women are all- rounders! They are capable of working, earing, looking after their family, their children, managing their household and their existence should be given importance too. It is important to reiterate the fact that women’s empowerment is something that we need to work on every single day.Afshan IqbalParticipant@afshanMarch 15, 2022 at 1:45 pm #34569
Are we moving towards a society that isn’t male-default? I believe YES. As we see, the times have changed and it’s not just a man’s world anymore. Women are making an impact in every field and they are leading in every way. There is no place where we find women any less than men. Women were always supposed to work at home and now there is a slight change in that thinking. I won’t say that society has curbed all the stereotypes but they have also started taking baby steps towards change. Although, there are still some people in our society who believe in the predominant patriarchal norms. Women are expected to work at home and take care of the family while a man is supposed to be the breadwinner but there’s no denying that the awareness about equality and gender neutrality is prevalent in today’s time too. When a woman is seen doing a job, people start assuming that a working woman won’t be able to manage her personal and professional life and will be bad in either of them. And some people encourage and support women’s empowerment. Take leadership from women and acknowledge their work and efforts. Both misogyny and feminism are there at present. Without question and beyond doubt, we are moving towards a society that isn’t male default but certainly, we have a long way to go. The journey is long but we know the destination is worth it.
