Has there been a day when you opened the newspaper in the morning and didn’t find a single news related to crime towards a woman? No, right? Crime against women include cases of rape, harassment, sexual assault, domestic violence. The cases of violence has been steadily increasing in our country and these crimes have been so normalized that we do not even attempt to read or inquire about them.
So what actually is the cause?
Patriarchy has been cited as the main cause of violence against women. A girl child is not educated in our country due to the strong bounds created by patriarchy, resulting in literacy coupled with low level of education making women more dependent on men for their survival. All this, in turn increases the domination of men over women.
Family factors also plays a great role in the crimes related to women. Witnessing a father beating the mother during childhood leads to perpetration of violence against his wife in adulthood. A child applies what he had been taught by his parents in the outer world.
    The solution?
    Education.
Education for both men and women. Education for the entire society. And education doesn’t mean learning textbooks and having a degree, education means knowledge of our entire society, knowledge of our rights and duties. Men needs to be taught that women are to be respected, to be treated an equal and not be a treated as a toy. On the other hand, women needs to be made aware of their rights, they need to learn the facts and the prevalence. We must strive for equality and together fight for the injustices done to women.

More than 370,000 cases of crimes against women were reported in 2020, as per the Government of India. In 2021, there was a 30 per cent rise in complaints of crimes against women. These are not just statistics, this is an eye-opener for all of us that should alarm us about the crimes that women are facing against them which increase every day. There are many instances of violence that go unreported in India. So just imagine the rate of crime against women in India.
Women are assaulted, raped, kidnapped eve teased, etc. Violence towards women isn’t limited to roads and strangers, women are not safe even at their homes and in between the people they know. Women are facing domestic violence, they are molested by their own family members, they have to face assault for dowry, workplace harassment is at an all-time high in our country, and what not!
Looking at the number of crimes happening every day, especially against girls, is alarming enough to include Self-defense training in schools/colleges across the country and make it compulsory for girls of all age groups. If self-defence training is included in the school/college it will help girls to be shielded from abuse and violence. Crimes like trafficking, abuse, rape, acid attacks, and molestation with girls are rapidly increasing thus it will be a big step to curb these crimes.
A girl who can protect herself from dangerous situations can also protect other girls. Empowering girls with these self-defence techniques along with education will raise the possibility of a safer world for girls. Self-defence classes will boost the confidence of the girls. This will help girls to protect themselves from unseen dangers. The government should work to the best of its capability to ensure that physical violence against women is curbed from our country. People should educate their children about equality and respect. Girls should speak up against violence and shouldn’t be afraid. Criminals should get the hardest punishments. It’s time that we eradicate the violence that women are facing in their lives.

1 in 3 women experience physical or sexual violence. Does this even sound surprising? Unfortunately no! This is not at all surprising in the current situation of the world. Women face all sorts of atrocities against them and the majority of these atrocities include violence in them.

Women have always faced society’s harmful mindset and it’s disgusting ways of “teaching” them how to behave. Our society has only known to either beat woman for voicing her opinions or keep her so tied up since the beginning that she never even finds her voice. This really needs to change now. We need feminism to change all this and we need to take actions right at this moment. To quote Emma Watson,

    “If not me, who?
    If not now, when?”
